Athena is a vertically integrated formulator and manufacturer of liquid and dry fertilizer blends designed for commercial cannabis cultivators. It has partnered with Demeter Designs, an irrigation and fertigation design team that uses state-of-the-art renderings to build detailed plans for any contractor to install its system(s) anywhere in the world.
Athena specializes in providing clean, balanced nutrients for cannabis cultivation. They offer a complete facility advisor service to help their extensive commercial grower network succeed while using the Athena program.
Athena is a well-known nutrient line in the cannabis industry due to its massive growth and expansion of knowledge in a short amount of operating time. It was launched in late 2018 and run by a powerful team, all veterans in the cannabis industry: Brandon Burkhart (Owner and Founder), Rob Williams (Chief Executive Officer), Brent Nicholls (Director of Sales) and Robert Schneider (Director of Product and Brand). Athena owns their manufacturing, AMG (Athena Manufacturing Group) and works in conjunction with, Demeter Designs (cannabis industry facility irrigation, fertigation facility designs, and renderings), and Imperium Controls (irrigation/fertigation system controllers).
Athena has expanded its internal logistic operations to encompass warehousing and an entire inventory of products. In response to their exponential growth, ever-expanding markets in the Midwest and East Coast, as well as challenges in the global supply chain, they have extended their national distribution footprint to Riverside, California, and Michigan, to better service existing customers, new customers, and their authorized hydroponic dealer network.
Despite the global pandemic, Athena has expanded from the United States worldwide and currently has over 700 authorized dealers in the United States alone. It’s available in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Portugal, and Macedonia. The company also earned full European distribution earlier this year. Athena is currently top 10 in revenue and a leading ten cannabis nutrient company globally. Moreover, income increased 10x from 2019 to 2020 and approximately 5x between 2020 and 2021.
To support its rapid growth, Athena has heavily invested in production infrastructure. “In February 2021, we acquired an additional production facility in Sacramento, California. As a continued and desired goal of achieving excellence in the industry, we obtained custom-made Murray and Doyle equipment for blending our two lines. These new automated blending and packaging machines will greatly increase our production capacity,” Brandon shared. Upon completion, their two facilities will be able to produce 2.5 million gallons of liquid fertilizer and 20 million pounds of dry fertilizer blends annually.
Athena is not a nutrient line but a program always pursuing the perfect run. The company’s core value is formulating products that improve quality, reduce costs, and drive consistency. They pride themselves on supporting growers of all sizes and different growing styles. The team consists of growers who have used many other lines and now solely use Athena because it is a program that works.
In response to the firm’s future plans, Burkhart stated, “Athena is always innovating, testing, and finding out what works better when running the Athena program. By the end of this year, we will expand and have three-to-five new distributors internationally and launch six new products by the end of 2022, all while testing and developing more.” Athena Ag Inc. has set the goal to be in the top three most-used nutrient lines in the cannabis industry globally and to be available throughout the entire EU by the end of this year.
