But Tobey Maguire certainly hasn't forgotten how to be a superhero.

The 42-year-old newly-single actor was spotted enjoying a beach day with some friends in Malibu on Tuesday when he used his quick-thinking to aid a woman who happened to be topless in the water.

The pretty mystery brunette seemed to be swimming in just her underwear as she emerged from the water in see-through black boyshort panties.

The Great Gatsby actor grabbed handfuls of seaweed and playfully put it on the other woman who wore a white one-piece bathing suit.

The two then joined forces to cover up their topless friend with the green algae completely before they headed back to shore.

Tobey was a perfect gent as he ran back to his tent on the beach to grab the woman a towel and even covered her up.

After the disaster was averted the two women walked back to their site on the beach and carried on with the rest of their holiday.

Tobey showed off his superhero physique in a pair of red striped swim shorts and seemed to be in good spirits as he tripped and fell in the water at one point.

No doubt the Golden Globe-nominated actor has been enjoying the single-life since his split with wife Jennifer Meyer.

Tobey and the 40-year-old professional jewelery maker Jennifer, whose father is former Universal Studios president and CEO Ronald Meyer, met in 2003 and married in 2007 in Hawaii.

The couple announced their split last October in a joint statement, saying: 'After much soul searching and consideration we have made the decision to separate as a couple.

'As devoted parents, our first priority remains raising our children together with enduring love, respect and friendship.'
